Dr Hu 2; Nu Hu Xing Hu

Dr Hu 2: Nu Hu Xing Huw

The single Nu Hu was started in 28th March 2024 using Sibelius under the working title “New Chords”.  It was transferred to Avid Pro and made into a couple of versions, with the "radio mix" trying to shorten the length (New Chords 1 and New chords radio mix). The final mix was made on 30th November using the "radio mix". It was one  of the first tracks I made from scratch, using an old idea I had when improvising as a young teen on the piano.

Th old chords I used where F and G  major held in the left hand, with the arpeggiated right hand cascade with the "other chord" (i.e. Arpeggio G over F and F over G). I then used the two adjacent major chords to move around with ascending and descending arpeggios in the synthesizer.  Lastly, I came up with the melody, stated by the synth.

The structure is pretty economical. The piano solo has a RH and left hand part, the left hand being the traditional jazz chords and the right hand an intricate solo.  I proceed this with a "vibes" which combines the synth melody with the LH chords of the piano solo. After the piano solo the synth returns with the melody but in counterpoint to the piano solo RH played on the vibes. I thus get three contrasting segments by recombining the piano solo and the synth melody.  The piece finishes with a brief coda.

The title is Nu Hu (i.e. new Huw). Xing Hu is the pinyin Chinese for new Hu. The mandarin text is Xing Hu.

The photo is me in 1975, on holiday with friends at a farm in Pembrokshire. This was around the time the I came up with the "old chords".
